The family often moved because of her father's position as diplomat, which meant that they were scattered across the world , including countries such as Germany, Japan, and Greece. When they settled in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In the autumn of 1980, she began attending the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in theater that year. Harden was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts 1988 in order for her MFA.
